Growing up as Haley Bennett

Haley Bennett was born in Fort Myers, Florida, USA on January 1988. Her parents met while attending a local church together. But when her mother became pregnant, the two hitchhiked to Florida, where Haley Bennett’s mother gave birth to her, as I just fucking told you.

The family lived in Naples, Florida for several years until her parents divorced. That’s when she moved with her father to the state of Ohio. Originally, Haley Bennett’s father opened an auto repair shop where they were living, but they never stayed in one place for very long. Her and her father moved all around the state.

Haley Bennett mentions that she was a social outcast during this time of her life. It made her grow to not give one fuck about what anyone else thought of her. Which undoubtedly helped her in her career that would be on the horizon within just a few short years.

While in Ohio, Haley Bennett and her father eventually settled down in an area of Ohio where she could enroll at the Barbizon Modeling School in Akron, Ohio. There, she learned all about poise and how to attract the attention of the limelight. Haley Bennett attended a couple of international modeling conventions, and actually won a couple of awards.

During high school in Ohio, she acted in plays and sang in the choir. She periodically moved to Florida, where she attended a high school in Naples, Florida and studied acting and music. Going back and forth between both schools where she could focus on similar interests helped Haley Bennett to work on her craft along with her modeling training.

By the time she was 18, Haley Bennett decided that she had to fucking take a chance on herself. She managed to convince her mother to fly out to Los Angeles, California and try to make it in show business. But because they didn’t have a whole lot of money, she didn’t have much time to work with.

Haley Bennett takes a chance

Haley Bennett had mostly been a background actor during her theater years. Yet, she wanted to be an actress more than anything. And she knew she could make it happen.

“In hindsight it was a ridiculous plan,” said Haley Bennett in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2016. “We just got a three-month lease [on a place to live].”

Haley Bennett has mentioned in the past that during these auditions and acting classes, she would get so nervous that she would break out in hives. But she continued going back and trying to find a path forward in Hollywood. And just as she and her mother’s three-month lease on the place they were living at, Haley Bennett decided to forge that path forward herself.

Haley Bennett reached out to one of the agents she had interacted with during her first few months in Los Angeles. Assuming it was all or nothing, she cooked up an idea on how to get represented by an agent in the first place:

“Totally off the cuff, I told the agent that this highly regarded agency wanted to represent me,” she said in her interview with Rolling Stone. “Where did I get that? I don’t know! But all of a sudden she became competitive and was like, ‘No! You can’t sign with them!’”

So Haley Bennett signed with the agent, right when the lease was ending. She had representation in Hollywood, and it was about to pay off immediately. Right away, she auditioned for the 2007 film Music and Lyrics.

She was flown to New York City where she auditioned and ultimately got the role. The fucking crazy thing about this role is that she had only auditioned three different times, ever. It was a huge deal for Haley Bennett, as she not only starred in the film, but also sang several of the songs in the film itself.

The movie wasn’t that big of a hit. In fact, it kind of fucking sucked. But it was a breakout role for Haley Bennett, and it opened up yet another door for her.

Haley Bennett attempts a singing career

Haley Bennett’s performance in Music and Lyrics made it quite clear that she had musical talents as well. Hot off of her first film, she signed a recording contract with 550 Music/NuSound Records. She got to work on recording her debut album, but it was ultimately never finished.

Haley Bennett did have a live concert in Los Angeles a year later. But her music failed to have an impact like her initial film debut. So she canned the whole recording artist idea, at least for the meantime.

Haley Bennett finds longevity

It was ultimately the right move. She signed a three-year deal with Warner Bros to finish out the decade. Over the next 10 years, Haley Bennett starred in a plethora of films. Some of them are totally forgettable, while others are quite memorable.

One such memorable film was The Equalizer alongside Denzel Washington. This seems to be the time in which Haley Bennett started to really hit her stride as an actress. She began popping up in all kinds of films, such as The Magnificent Seven, The Girl on the Train, and the unique, fully-first-person film Hardcore Henry.

Around this time, Haley Bennett married that handsome son of a bitch, British director Joe Wright. She gave birth to her first child in 2018. Nowadays, the family lives in England.

A year after giving birth, Haley Bennett also starred and produced the film Swallow, which won her a Best Actress Award at the 2019 Tribeca Film. The next year, she starred in films based around books. That began with The Devil All the Time, featuring interweaving tales of death, religion, and betrayal in mid-20th century Ohio and West Virginia.

Haley Bennett also starred in Hillbilly Elegy: a memoir of the same name. It details a man’s struggles with growing up in the West Virginia area, causing him to act out by fucking his family’s sofa. That part didn’t make it into the film, and I think it was a real missed opportunity for celebrated director Ron Howard.

Unfortunately, both films in 2020 were heavily panned. The former was seen as way too fucking dark, while the latter was just an abortion of a film. Still, critics agreed that, in like most of her films, Haley Bennett shined like a goddamn star.

Wherever the fuck she feels like! Haley Bennett seems quite comfortable with the amount of work that she’s getting despite starring in that trainwreck of a film, Borderlands.
