If you watched your fair share of blockbuster movies during the 2000s then there’s a solid chance that you’ve come across Eva Mendes before. She’s a caramel-skinned Latina stunner whose on-screen presence is always so damn sublime, but in contrast to her attractive appearance, the characters she usually plays are oftentimes individuals with firm and somewhat stoic, almost brickwall-like personalities. Eva Mendes has an uncanny ability to embody either fully serious characters who kick ass and have stern demeanors, or joke-cracking goofballs who are undeniably funny or just plain unserious - or something that’s a combination of both. Just take a look at her role in 2 Fast 2 Furious and compare it with her roles in Hitch or The Other Guys; in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Eva Mendes’ character is an ass-kicking hottie who barely cracks a smile. However, in Hitch and The Other Guys, her characters are almost complete polar opposite of that; they’re lighthearted jokers who look like they couldn’t hurt a fly.

All that being said, Eva’s range as an actress, particularly her ability to be funny without being overly cringe (a curse that many female actresses and comedians have to endure) allows her to break free from being locked down in the same old typecast role of sexy ass-kicking love interest which she seems to always end up with.

No Matter Her Characters’ Personalities, Eva Always Seems To Be The Main Love Interest

No matter what sort of character Eva is portraying, whether a joker or an ass-kicker, she’s still a grade-A movie wifey. She’s got a very traditional attractiveness about her that renders her sexy yet not overly or unrealistically attractive. Plus, the characters she typically plays don’t have bimbo-esque personalities (even the funny ones), rather, as was already mentioned, they either have a comedic, lighthearted disposition to them, or a serious no-nonsense demeanor - or a golden balance somewhere in between. So, when you take all that and put it in one package, you get one of the most reliable and consistent on-screen wifeys of Hollywood.

That said, Eva’s been the on-screen wifey for many male Hollywood stars in countless, movies. She’s sexy, and can seamlessly convince viewers that she’s a murderous wife of a cartel boss out for revenge on her husband’s killer - or a stay-at-home wife with a keen sense of humor.

So, whether you like Eva Mendes’ acting or not, you can’t deny the fact that her range is impressive, and the best part about it all is that Eva can pull off all her roles without breaking the immersion of her other characters. For example, if you were to watch The Other Guys and then 2 Fast 2 Furious immediately after, you’d still be convinced that Eva’s character in 2 Fast 2 Furious is as serious as can be, regardless of the fact that she’s a total goofball in The Other Guys. And again, in both those movies, Eva is either the wife or love interest of one of the main characters - that is her typecast after all. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie starring Eva Mendes that didn’t have her playing the role of love interest of the main male protagonist, or at least the love interest of one of the main characters.

She Was A Force To Be Reckoned With In The 2000s

I don’t mean to sound too sexist or anything with this whole “love interest of the main male protagonist” talk, but that’s just what Eva Mendes movies are - all of the flicks she stars in have main male protagonists, and in almost all of them, she’s the main love interest for those male protagonists. Do keep in mind that Eva’s prime was the 2000s, and back then, most movies had a very obvious heteronormative love narrative between the main male protagonist and certain attractive wifey-material female figure. I personally haven’t seen her in a movie since The Other Guys, which is by now a 13-year-old movie, so I’m genuinely interested in finding out what she has been doing for the past decade. After the 2010s, Mendes kept up her acting spree for only a few years before deciding to step out of the acting scene. Between 2010 and 2014, she appeared in various movies, most of which are crime-themed. These include “Girl In Progress,” “Holy Motors,” “Clear History” and “The Place Beyond The Pines,” which is easily one of the most famous flicks that she stars in. However, sometime near the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014, Eva decided to stop acting, as her IMDB page shows no further entries that go past her appearance in a 2014 film titled “Cat.” Apparently, Mendes was tired of always being away from home because of the movies she was acting in (I mean, she was a total workaholic who starred in at least 3 or so movies annually), and she was also unimpressed by the typical acting roles that were given to her, which is why she decided to stop acting altogether after starring in the aforementioned 2014 film “Cat”.

She even gave out a statement for her acting hiatus: “I wanted to be home with my babies and fortunately my other business ventures allowed me to do that more than acting would. Also, I was not excited about the stereotypical roles being offered to me at the time.” So there you have it, Mendes’ hiatus from acting, explained in her own words. Now, she does claim that this acting hiatus of hers is temporary, but she hasn’t appeared in a movie in more or less 10 years now, so it might be permanent.

Eva’s Got Her Hands Full With Her Business Ventures Nowadays

Nowadays Eva’s not so much on movie sets as she is in offices and in front of screens, as well as on phones and in conference halls, talking deals, setting up meetings, looking at projections and spreadsheets, and doing all the other boring things that owners of multiple businesses do. In other words, today Eva Mendes is an all-out hustler with multiple business ventures, and for her, this is a far more rewarding lifestyle as opposed to being a famous Hollywood actress. Eva’s currently running a few different businesses simultaneously; she’s got a fashion and clothing line called “The Eva Mendes Collection” which she oversees.

She also has a contract with the popular beauty brand Avon under which she’s released several beauty and fragrance products, plus, she’s also the face and creative director of a relatively new drugstore makeup brand named Circa. She’s also got a kitchen utensils brand named Skura Style which focuses on, well, kitchen utensils, as well as some other brands that she’s working on or collaborating with in one way or another. That being said, she’s way too busy to appear on a movie set any time soon - but hey, at least her husband is one of the most currently popular male Hollywood actors on the planet. That’s right - did I forget to mention that Eva Mendes is married to and has been together with Ryan Gosling for about 12 years now and has two kids with him?

Ever since they started shooting Place Beyond The Pines together, Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling fell in love, and they’ve been pretty much inseparable since then. They started dating all the way back in 2011, and today they’re married with two daughters. And while Eva’s not really hyped up for shooting movies anymore, Ryan Gosling’s firing on all cylinders in that department - he very recently appeared as Ken in the 2024 Barbie movie, which was a massive box office success. It’s kind of funny that Eva’s running all these businesses and trying to make money by the book as the wife while Ryan is shooting movies with Margot Robbie dressed up as a girl’s toy.
