There’s a good chance that you’ve seen Anya in a movie or a show by now. I admit, I was a little late to the whole Anya Taylor-Joy hype train, but by now I’m well aware of who she is. The first time I came across her was in that Split movie in which she gets kidnapped by a schizophrenic James McAvoy. And as soon as I saw her, I thought just who is this pretty blonde actress and why am I instantly smitten by her ethereal beauty and alluring accent? She’s none other than Anya Taylor-Joy, and let me just say, she’s worth every Hollywood million.
She’s both insanely talented and impossibly pretty, plus she can work her ass off, so it’s no wonder why a plethora of popular magazine tabloids have been talking about her for the past near-decade. Now, you might be thinking that I’m giving her a little too much praise, but hear me out; Anya’s not just a pretty face, she can also act. If you take a closer look at her performances, you’ll see that there’s a lot of depth hidden under that alluring surface of hers.
Regrettably, I haven’t seen too much of her - I only watch maybe a few movies per month tops since I’m too busy watching hundreds of other kinds of flicks (it is my job after all), but I’ve seen enough of her in films and interviews to reasonably discern that she’s got quite the magnitude as an actress.
At this point, Anya’s pretty much proven that she can outact more or less every other currently popular pretty under-30 Hollywood actress out there. In layman’s terms, this is one hell of an actress, so don’t be fooled into thinking that she’s just some cute “Hollywood bimbo” that gets roles because of her looks. Most of the characters she plays come with several layers of emotional and moral complexity, and she knows precisely how to juggle through such a limbo in a way that just convinces you, for lack of a better term.
Anya Taylor-Joy made her breakthrough in the entertainment industry with her lead role as Thomasin in the critically acclaimed horror film "The Witch" (2015). In this movie, Anya made her bones as an actress by convincing critics and fans alike that she could effectively convey fear, vulnerability, and most importantly of all complexity with her acting roles. Then In 2016’s Split (which I’ve personally seen) Anya’s status as a top up-and-coming young Hollywood figure was even further cemented thanks to her giving an outstanding performance in her role of Casey, a young teenage girl who gets kidnapped by a freaky schizophrenic James McAvoy who I mentioned earlier.
In Split Anya proves that her initial success from “The Witch” wasn’t a fluke, as she yet again surprised audiences and critics alike by efficaciously projecting an authentic sense of emotional depth with her role. And do keep in mind that her character was constantly put through the most terrifying of scenarios throughout that whole movie, and very few Hollywood actors know how to convey such a nuanced level of fear that’s simultaneously peppered with hints of bravery and hope.
Anya’s kinda like what happens when you take Johnny Depp and put him in the body of a young and somewhat bitmoji-looking blondie, so in a way, she’s the perfect young Hollywood actress of the modern day. And, all of the roles she plays seem to be getting progressively more complex, especially ever since she appeared in Netflix’s King’s Gambit. Anya’s role in “King’s Gambit” was what propelled her to superstardom. From that moment on pretty much everyone knew who she was - even guys who aren’t into blondes. “The Witch (2015)” and “Split” (2016) each helped Anya set a foot into the world of Hollywood, and then King’s Gambit pushed her into it face-first. And speaking of faces, there’s no point in further withholding the fact that Anya’s got one of the most visually-stimulating faces you’ve ever seen. She’s a real beauty, and I’m so glad that she’s not just some pretty-girl-gone-actress type. After all, how could she with such an interesting upbringing and early life.
Did you know that Anya was born in Miami to a couple who was vacationing there? No really, she was born in the hot and sizzling city of Miami to a half-Argentinian half-Scottish dad and a half-Spanish half-English mom, both of whom were vacationing there. All of a sudden, Anya’s mom had a baby while still on vacation in Miami with her husband, and that’s how Anya has a US citizenship despite the fact that her parents both live in the UK.
That’s how Anya can go back and forth from the US to the UK as she works, and she can do anything she wants in the US legally as a citizen, even probably get a 401k from her acting job, if that’s even possible. And she should damn well get one if she can, since again, she is a killer actress. Anya discovered her passion for acting at a young age and began pursuing it as a career. And naturally, her ethnic background helped her stand out in auditions, and it’s also clear that her upbringing in different cultures and languages contributed to her ability to take on various roles with such authenticity and adaptability. So even though Anya’s got a US citizenship, she acts like a Brit, and let’s face it; the Brits are usually better actors than their American colleagues.
After being an official Hollywood actor for about 8 years now, it’s become somewhat apparent that Anya excels in period pieces. Maybe that’s just because of her accent, or maybe not - either way, Anya’s at her most immersive when she stars in period pieces. That’s why so many of her movies are indeed period pieces, including her role in King’s Gambit, which is set in the 60s. “The Witch” is set in the 1630s, whereas one of her latest movies “Amsterdam” (which by the way is one of the most heavily star-studded Hollywood movies ever made) is set in the 1930s. 2021’s lesser known “Last Night In SoHo” is set in the 60, and Anya also appeared in the 20s with her role in “Peaky Blinders.”
And who can forget The Northman - one of the most popular movies Anya’s ever starred in. It’s a viking-themed period piece set in the 10th century, and I might just have to go ahead and see it for myself because I personally didn’t expect a viking movie to have such a high Rotten Tomatoes rating.
When all’s said and done, Anya is easily one of the most skilled actresses and captivating on-screen appearances that Tinsel Town has ever seen. But she isn’t just talented - she also puts in the work - one might even say that Anya is an over-achiever of sorts, since there’s seems to be no skill too great for this girl to learn if she needs to nail a movie scene perfectly. Plus, Anya’s also picked up an array of multidisciplinary skills in her childhood years as is, which of course only helped her achieve what she has today.
For example, first and foremost we all know that Anya’s multilingual, and she even went so far as to learn Russian for her role in King’s Gambit. She can also proficiently play guitar with, and is also a talented ballerina which makes her on-screen physicality all the more graceful. Anya was also a model in the UK before her acting debut, but most importantly of all, she’s smart enough to know how to perfectly handle fame, especially fame that comes really quickly and suddenly. All that being said, why not fire up The Northman tonight and see Anya perform for yourself? I know I will.
