If you watch Hollywood movies (and who doesn’t), then chances are you've encountered the delightful Anna Kendrick before. She’s starred in all kinds of flicks; serious ones, funny ones, dramatic ones, and even ones about vampires and werewolves. However, it’s safe to say that one of the most well-known movies in which she’s starred (which also marked her initial breakthrough into the realm of big Hollywood movies) is the 2009 comedy romance Up In The Air. Up In The Air was when I was first introduced to her -  before I saw that movie, I had no idea who Anna Kendrick was, as she was still a young and relatively inexperienced actress at that time. And even though I watched that movie over a decade ago, I distinctly remember asking myself repeatedly who Natalie Keener’s actress was, and naturally, that actress was none other than Anna Kendrick.

Throughout almost the whole movie I remember thinking this to myself every time I laid my eyes on Natalie Keener; “Who is that girl and how is she managing to hold her own while sharing the screen with a Hollywood heavyweight like George Clooney?” I was surprised by Anna’s magnetic charisma in that flick, and her ability to capture and hold my attention, despite the fact that she was still a newbie actress. Never in a million years did I expect her to be as interesting or as attention-commanding as she turned out to be.

And, the more I saw her in other movies, the more I was convinced that she’s an Oscar-worthy actress and not just a pretty face. Anna’s got a wicked charisma about her, and she takes it with her on every movie set she’s on - when she talks, you can feel the sharp, inquisitiveness in her voice, which in combination with her fixated stare and energetic disposition make her one of the most unique female actresses on the planet.

All that being said, a lot of female Hollywood actresses who’ve emerged in the past 10-20 years have been little more than “pretty on-screen faces” who are just there to make sure whatever movie they’re starring in has sufficient eye candy and is as captivating as can be. So, it was refreshing to see that Anna didn’t fall into that category.

I mean look, she’s not a bombshell or anything, but she’s still quite pretty - at least, pretty enough to keep your attention fixated on whatever flick she’s starring in. But, all that being said, Anna Kendrick is by all means a real actress, and isn’t typecast as merely just a pretty girl. And even if she did have a role in Twilight, Anna Kendrick is still a talented actress with a surprising amount of depth and range, and today, I’m going to dissect all of her most iconic and critically acclaimed roles for your reading pleasure.

Anna Played A Therapist In 2011’s 50/50, Which Just By Its Title Alone Is A Complex Role

In 2011’s 50/50, the main character (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is given a life-threatening cancer diagnosis and is told that he has a 50% chance to live. He then of course falls into a depressive and somewhat nihilistic state, and his goofy friend (played by Seth Rogen) is pretty much his only source of cheer and happiness at that point. Long story short, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character goes to therapy so he can learn to deal with his cancer diagnosis, and the therapist is played by none other than Anna Kendrick. Anna Kendrick’s character serves as a crucial support system for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character as he navigates the emotional and physical challenges of his illness.

Despite his therapist’s lack of experience, she genuinely cares about him and is determined to provide him with the best possible care. Throughout the movie, Anna Kendrick’s therapist character undergoes her own personal and professional growth. She learns valuable lessons about empathy, the importance of connecting with patients on a personal level, and the complexities of dealing with life-altering situations. So, this already tells you that Anna’s quite a talented actress - however, in later movies/musicals she’ll prove that she can sing just as well as she can act.

She Knocked It Out of The Park In 2012’s Pitch Perfect

In the 2012 musical comedy film Pitch Perfect, Anna Kendrick played the lead role of Beca Mitchell, an alt-girl emo/goth-style college freshman who is somewhat reluctant about embracing campus life and initially prefers spending her time alone making mash-up music mixes on her laptop. So right off the bat, we know that Anna’s funny enough of an actress to be cast in a lead role in a comedy - a feat that not too many Hollywood actresses can muster. In Pitch Perfect, Beca Mitchell is as edgy as an alt-girl could be in 2012, and this altsy-edginess of hers also meant that she’s a non-conformist, and no one else in her college or even in her college acapella group shared her style, so she was definitely the odd one out in that movie - a real antiheroine protagonist if you will.

As the film progresses, Beca experiences personal growth. She learns to balance her individuality with teamwork and gains a sense of responsibility within her college acapella group. Her ability to blend her unique musical style with the traditional approach of her college acapella group ultimately contributes to their success in the movie’s narrative. Anna Kendrick’s musical ability was given lots of spotlight in this flick, and the movie propelled her to stardom as it was Anna’s first leading role in a big Hollywood production - she then reprised her role as Beca Mitchell twice in the second and third continuation of Pitch Perfect which came out in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

Anna Defied Expectations Again With Her Role As Cinderella In 2014’s Into The Woods

Two years after Pitch Perfect was released, Anna, now a more or less globally famous Hollywood actress, was yet again given a leading role in a big-budget musical. This time around, she played Cinderella in a fantasy-themed, Hollywood-produced musical called Into The Woods. Into The Woods is basically a mash-up of several classic fairy tale stories mixed up into one narrative, with a multitude of songs laced all throughout it (it is a musical after all). With this movie, Anna was given another chance to showcase her incredible singing talent alongside her impressive acting skills, which she of course did with ease. Not only did Anna show off the incredible vocal range of her “pipes” in this flick, but she also gave Cinderella a more complex and nuanced dimension, which was incredibly refreshing to see, as Cinderella is traditionally portrayed as a humble, good-hearted and rather simple character in her classic stories.

Plus, in this movie, Cinderella gets the chance to interact with other fairy tale characters whom she’s never interacted with in her origin story - these include Little Red Riding Hood, The Baker, The Baker’s Wife The Witch, and so on, all of whom were played by heavyweight Hollywood actors the likes of Meryl Streep and so on. And this of course only further added to the complexity of Cinderella’s traditionally simple-as-can-be personality. Ultimately, Anna Kendrick's portrayal of Cinderella in Into the Woods earned critical acclaim and once again showcased her incredible range and versatility as both an actress and a singer.

Now, Let’s Take A Look At Anna Kendrick’s Backstory

So, by now it’s clear as day that Anna Kendrick is one of the most critically acclaimed actresses in modern-day musical cinema, but just how did she get here? Well, surprisingly enough, her family didn’t have any connections to the entertainment industry while she was growing up, which means that she’s more or less a self-made Hollywood actress who made it thanks to a combination of hard work and talent. Anna Kendrick was born on August 9, 1985, in Portland, Maine, and grew up with her two parents and older brother. Her mother Janice was an accountant and her father William was a history teacher.

Her older brother, on the other hand, was already involved in the entertainment industry, as he was a director and an actor. But, he wasn’t the reason why Anna got into acting, as she initially displayed an interest in acting and singing from an early age. More specifically, at the age of 10, Anna auditioned for the Broadway musical High Society and successfully secured a role. Her performance in the production earned her a nomination for a Tony Award, making her one of the youngest Tony nominees in history.

That being said, the fact that Anna managed to not only bag a role in a Broadway musical but also earn a Tony Award nomination at the age of 10 without her parents or brother having any real connections in the entertainment industry is quite a feat on its own, proving that she truly is a self-made actress/singer.
