Anne Hathaway; most of us know her only from a few movies, and it’s safe to say that for many men out there, the first and only time they ever saw her was in the third Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises (you know, the one where Batman fights the masked villain Bane). In that movie, Anne plays a morally conflicted Catwoman who meets, betrays, and then saves Batman (spoiler alert), and while she didn’t have the most screen time in that flick, she did have one particular scene on the Bat-bike which I’m sure is still vividly embedded in the minds of everyone who saw that movie (I’m not gonna spoil that scene for you, you can Google it for yourself). But aside from being Catwoman, one of the most interesting facts about Anne Hathaway is that she became famous overnight.

Most Hollywood actors tend to have long careers full of small roles that sometimes last for over a decade before they’re cast as a main character in a huge Hollywood blockbuster that makes their careers. But for Anne, the long career full of small roles never happened, as her first official acting role was Meghan Green in a short and relatively unknown 22-episode-long TV series known as “Get Real” that ran from 1999 to 2000. Then in the same year, Anne starred in the sequel of her magnum opus “The Princess Diaries” - the second installment of this movie, named “The Princess Diaries” The Royal Engagement” is all about Mia Thermopolis’ journey from being a princess to becoming a queen, which of course implies that there’s some sort of engagement or wedding happening in that movie which I won’t get into because I haven’t saw it. But hey, a sequel to the massively popular “Princess Diaries” movie which Hathaway initially became world-famous for means that her career just kept reaching newer and farther heights, so it’s safe to say that she was one of the top 10 most popular female Hollywood actresses by 2004. Then in ‘05 Hathaway took a more serious approach to acting with her role as “Allison Lang” in “Havoc,” a gritty crime movie based on street gangs in Los Angeles. And the following year in ‘06, Anne would star in a cult-classic movie named “Devil Wears Prada” which will have her portraying one of her most career-defining roles.

If “Princess Diaries” Made Hathaway Famous, Then “Devil Wears Prada” Cemented Her Into Stardom

Now, even though I haven’t really watched Devil Wears Prada just like many other Anne Hathaway movies (although I do plan on watching it soon), I am well aware of the impact it had on both Hathaway’s career and pop culture in general. The movie was a significant milestone in Hathaway’s career and I remember it being heavily marketed when it came out - it was on billboards, posters, TV ads, and radio ads, and lots of people were talking about it, so it was definitely one of the most popular movies of 2006.

That being said, in Devil Wears Prada Hathaway portrayed Andy Sachs, a smart, capable, and idealistic young woman who initially takes the job at Runway (a popular, high-profile fashion magazine) as a means to an end. But little did she know that her boss would be the devil herself, i.e. a very strict and condescending Meryl Streep who made sure to criticize every single mistake that Hathaway's character makes throughout the movie, crushing the confidence of Hathaway’s character at every turn.

In other words, Meryl Streep, Hathaway's boss in the movie, is literally "the Devil, wearing Prada,” and she ensured that Hathaway's character couldn't so much as get a moment of relief from the constant harsh criticism and belittlement that spewed out of her. That being said, the transformation of Hathaway's character is a central theme of the film as she navigates the high-pressure and often cutthroat world of fashion journalism, all while enduring her tyrant-like boss.

Andy Sachs undergoes a significant evolution in her personal and professional life during the movie, and Anne Hathaway’s performance of the character earned the praise of many critics. Ever since this movie aired there’s barely a soul out there who doesn’t know who Anne Hathaway is, and if they don’t know then you can be sure that they’ll instantly recognize her face.

What Is Hathaway Doing Nowadays?

The short answer; still acting. The long answer; Hathaway continues to appear in a variety of film roles, with one of her most notable recent projects being 2020’s “The Witches,” a dark fantasy comedy film based on a story by the famous children’s book author Roald Dahl. Hathaway also appeared in 2021’s “Locked Down,” a crime-drama revolving around the Covid pandemic, specifically the mandatory lockdown laws that ensued as a result of it, and the challenges surrounding them. There’s also going to be a sequel for that Witches movie I just mentioned, which is yet to release. Hathaway has appeared in about half a dozen or so different movie and TV projects in the past handful of years, so it’s safe to say that career is not slowing down whatsoever.
